The Wider Curriculum -

Aiming to create the citizens of tomorrow -Ready, Respectful and Safe

We provide so much more than just the National Curriculum...

We have a bespoke Citizens programme aimed at teaching the attributes our children need for our community

Inbuilt throughout our curriculum and teaching are opportunities for every child to learn the skills needed to become an active citizen in our society.

Our aim is for our children to participate within both the local and wider community through engaging with organisations and people - experiencing a range of contexts which can then influence their understanding and learning and enable them to become positively and actively engaged with their community.

We develop ideas and solutions and respect different opinions focusing on a celebration of diversity and differences - we run a parallel strand of life skills which enables a focus on personal qualities and skills that are needed in every aspect of our daily lives.  We use a restorative practice which role models empathy and solution based thinking. We always refer to the behaviour and it's impact.
We build in opportunities for social interactions and positive communication with others, including resolving conflict We enable an understanding of how to keep healthy, both physically and mentally, to support long term well-being.
We promote leadership opportunities - enabling children to develop valuable communication, organisation and debating skills through key roles of responsibility and experiences through our Pupil Parliament. We have a focus on online safety and we link with the community safety focus for our young people
Impressive beach-themed artwork created at schools in the Littlehampton area has gone on display following a project on water safety run by the RNLI and Southern Water.

Littlehampton Museum is hosting the Littlehampton Locality Schools Water Safety Project art exhibition.

Pupils, teachers, parents and carers gathered at the museum, in Manor House, Church Street, to see all the paintings, drawings and sculptures on display.

The project was inspired by headteachers, who wanted to run a student education programme on water safety while celebrating water and living by the sea.

Restorative Behaviour Policy and British Values

We use a restorative behaviour policy which aims at role modelling empathy and solution based thinking. ‘Affective’ statements are used to help children think through the impact of their actions, referring to the behaviour rather than the person. The basis of this work is through the Unicef Rights, Respecting schools programme where the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) are at the heart of a school's planning, policies, practice and ethos.  https://www.unicef.org.uk/rights-respecting-schools/

British Values are also integral to this solution based approach. The values of Democracy, Rule of Law, Respect and Tolerance (of those with different faiths and beliefs, and for those without faith) and Individual Liberty; promoting and reflecting life in modern Britain.

RSHE - relationship, sex and health education

We enable our children to have the knowledge and understanding of how to keep themselves healthy, both physically and mentally, to support their long term well-being. We offer a bespoke RSHE curriculum which enables focus on diversity, differences and a celebration of each child’s unique qualities and additionally dovetail objectives through other subjects and through assemblies.

Life skills and Pupil Parliament

As part of this teaching we run a parallel strand of life skills which enables a focus on personal qualities and skills that are needed in every aspect of our daily lives. We also use and encourage critical thinking through structured use of questioning – this helps our children explore ideas and develop a respect for other opinions.

Peer Mediators

We have selected and trained groups of children to help deal with minor squabbles and the everyday arguments that occur on the playground. They use simple techniques to help de-escalate conflict and encourage their peers to deal with the difficulty and move forwards. School staff are always on hand to help, but it is a real pleasure to watch young children work out solutions to their own problems. See here for more details on our Peer Mediation Scheme.
