Accelerated Reader, MyOn and Boom Reader
What is Accelerated Reader?
Accelerated Reader is a computer program used independently by children in Year 3 and above. It helps teachers manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice. Your child picks a book at his/her own level and reads it at his/her own pace. When finished, your child takes a short quiz on the computer – passing the quiz is an indication that your child has understood what has been read.
Your child's reading/book level
Children are initially tested to see which level they should read and they are given a ZPD (zone of proximal development) which is their range of book level targeted at their next stage in reading and comprehension. Usually they start at the lowest level in the range and read through the levels at their own pace. Using this range they choose levelled books in school and when they have read the book they then complete the online quiz. As children pass quizzes they receive certification to show their success. There is also a competitive element in school as classes compete against each other for the most quizzes passed each month! AR gives both children and teachers feedback based on the quiz results which the teacher then uses to help the child set targets and ongoing reading practice.
Finding books at your child's level
Most popular children’s books are on the Accelerated Reader programme so your child can select from the wide range of books in our class and school libraries. Students wishing to look up titles that are part of the Accelerated Reader programme can search through over 25,000 books on www.arbookfind.co.uk.
Children can build their reading skills and stamina, and are not put off by books that are too basic or too demanding for them. They also have fun completing quizzes and earning points along the way towards individual or class targets. Struggling readers are well supported, and high achievers are encouraged to read books that really engage and challenge them. Teachers can track children’s progress book by book, and tailor recommendations to a child’s individual needs. Above all, children are highly motivated and inspired by successful reading.
To help parents we have put together recommended reads for children in every year group - these have been chosen to link to the correct reading age in every year.
How MyOn and Oxford Owl work with Accelerated Reader to support reading...
MyON website
If you do not have books at home, children can read over 7000 books online at https://www.myon.com/login/index.html
Once the book has been read, many books from this site have quizzes on the AR website.
Oxford OWL website
The Oxford OWL site also has thousands of books.
For younger children the books cover the phonics sounds.
For KS2, many of these books can then be quizzed on using the AR site. Again, simply type the book title into the search bar on the AR website.
Registering for the Oxford Owl site is free.
Library resources
If you’d like even more reading options West Sussex libraries have lots of services available that might help you to find more reading material on which to quiz!
